Lundbreck Falls Morning Light — Where the river greets the day
About this Print
Chasing First Light at Lundbreck Falls
The alarm went off at 4:45 a.m. while we were attending a photography conference in Pincher Creek. As photographers, it's almost impossible to be surrounded by stunning landscapes and not sneak away for a sunrise shoot, so we headed to Lundbreck Falls in the early darkness, hoping for the kind of morning that landscape photographers dream about.
The forecast wasn't particularly promising, but there was enough cloud cover to make us hopeful. The sun would be rising behind us, and we were hoping for a "reverse sunrise"—one of those magical moments when the eastern sky remains relatively plain while clouds overhead catch brilliant pink and orange light from the sun below the horizon.
When we arrived, we expected to find a crowd of photographers already staking out compositions. Instead, the falls were completely quiet. For more than an hour, we had the place entirely to ourselves. The only sounds were the rush of water and the occasional songbird greeting the day.
What I hadn't anticipated was the amount of spray coming off the falls. The first compositions I captured looked promising on the back of the camera, but when I zoomed in, I discovered the filter was covered with tiny water droplets. The falls were throwing mist much farther than I realized, and those droplets softened the image beyond recovery. It was a frustrating discovery, especially in the fleeting light of dawn when every minute matters.
After cleaning the filter and paying much closer attention to the spray, I finally captured this frame. The dramatic clouds we had hoped for never arrived. Instead, the sky settled into soft pastel tones—subtle pinks, blues, and lavender hues that quietly reflected the calm of the morning. Combined with the fresh spring greens surrounding the river and the historic railway bridge in the distance, the scene took on a gentler mood than we had originally envisioned.
It's a reminder that landscape photography is often less about getting exactly what you planned and more about responding to what nature gives you. Some mornings deliver fiery skies and dramatic weather. Others offer solitude, soft light, and the simple pleasure of watching a river awaken with the day.
