Sunwapta Falls

Getting this photo required quite a bit of boldness. But it was worth it to capture the raw energy and layered movement of Sunwapta Falls.

The standard view from the bridge was nice but not the impact we were looking for. We spotted a narrow, worn path that led down the embankment toward the canyon’s edge. With gear in hand, Randy carefully made his way down, knowing the best angle wasn’t from the main viewpoint above, but from much lower — where the force of the water could be seen colliding head-on with the rock at its base.

The roar of the falls was almost overwhelming at that distance, but the sound added to the focus and urgency of getting the shot. The long exposure reveals the fluid grace of the water, carving its way with power and elegance. It’s a photo that brings together both the intensity of the place and the quiet patience needed to capture it just right.

This fine art image of Sunwapta Falls was captured from a precarious lower angle, requiring a careful descent down a rugged path to reach the canyon’s edge. The long exposure technique highlights the water’s movement and power as it crashes into the rock below, capturing both the drama and timeless rhythm of the landscape. A testament to persistence, patience, and a deep respect for the raw beauty of the Rockies.
