Teacup Rock

We visited Prince Edward Island back in 2021 and spent time exploring the island’s north shore—notably Thunder Cove Beach, where Teacup Rock stood perched on its fragile base. The formation, rust-red and improbably balanced like a teacup atop its saucer, instantly captivated us. We captured some images, drawn to its improbable structure and the timeless beauty of its eroding form.

Tragically, this beloved formation didn’t last long after our visit. In late September 2022, Post-Tropical Storm Fiona—a powerful system that still brought hurricane-force winds—crashed into Atlantic Canada and pummeled the fragile sandstone. Teacup Rock collapsed entirely under the storm’s fury and was washed away Canadian GeographicIsland Trails.

It’s comforting to know we captured it in its final years, immortalizing something that no longer exists. That photo now feels like a cherished memory of a geological marvel—one whose fall speaks to the ever-changing nature of coastline and the undeniable power of the sea..
