Factory Butte Sunrise
This photograph was taken in the quiet stillness of early morning, well before the first light of dawn touched the desert. we had scouted this area near Hanksville, Utah, the day before and knew that any later in the morning, the shifting light would flatten the subtle textures that make this formation so mesmerizing.
Getting there was no easy task—the road was rough and rugged, demanding slow, careful driving. We parked a fair distance from the base of Factory Butte and waited for the right light. Randy was able to capture the most amazing light as the sun rose, revealing elegant, almost otherworldly lines carved into the landscape by wind and time.
This is one of those rare moments when the camera can hold still something the eye would barely have time to notice—fleeting texture, gentle shadow, and the perfect alignment of shape and mood.
